Homemade condensed milk recipe + tips

Let us introduce you – an easy homemade condensed milk recipe. This product only has 2 ingredients and is super easy to make. It is also, ultra-creamy, gluten-free, and thick enough, so it can be used in many different recipes! Also have something for vegans including vegan/dairy-free as well as sugar alternative options!

In our opinion this homemade condensed milk recipe is amazing! That is why we would like to share it with you. Because it is such a versatile staple in every kitchen! By the way, it is incredibly simple to make. Only 2 ingredients in this homemade condensed milk, which we are almost certain you probably already have in your storage: sugar and milk! A dairy-free option is also included for vegan food lovers!

What exacly is condensed milk?

It is a combination of milk and sugar that is slow-cooked when a lot of water is removed without scalding the milk.  Rich,  sweet & thick! Naturally gluten-free and can be found in many different cuisines around the world.

Why you would like to make condensed milk?

Lots of products bought in stores tend to have processed ingredients in them, that is why is better to check everything before buying or choose reliable manufacturers – like us. The ingredients

An investment in knowledge pays the best.

  • Milk: full-fat dairy milk, but low-fat milk also can be used, or dairy-free milk.
  • Sugar: cane sugar, but also white sugar or brown sugar can be used. 

Sweetener options

Instead of cane sugar, it is possible to use the following sweeteners: Coconut sugar, Maple syrup, Honey, or Agave.

Just keep in mind, that the color & flavor of the condensed milk may be slightly different, depending on the sweetener. Please note that the sweetener needs to be able to caramelize.

Homemade condensed milk

Let’s make it in 4 ultra simple steps! First, combine the milk and the sugar in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to an almost-boil, stirring continuously to help the sugar dissolve. Please stir frequently that will help to avoid any lumps. Then reduce the heat and simmer for about 35-45 minutes and by the way, there is no need to stir anymore. It’s ready when the mixture has reduced by around half and has slightly darkened in color. It will become a thicker consistency – must be thick syrupy milk. Then let the condensed milk cool completely at room temperature. After that transfer it to an airtight glass container. 

How to store & use?

Please note that the condensed milk will thicken further when it is placed in the fridge. Fridge: Homemade condensed milk can be stored in the fridge for about a week. Freezer: it is possible to freeze it – for not more than 3 months. Bring it to room temperature before using. If needed, whisk to a smooth consistency.

As was mentioned above, homemade condensed milk can be used instead of milk or creamer in coffee and tea drinks or to make fudge and caramels. Use it in baking when making puddings cookies, and custards.
